Top junior golfers from Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam are set to compete in the Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines (JGFP) International Interclub Championships at the Mimosa Plus Golf and Country Club in Clark, Angeles, from 11 to 13 April.

Thailand will field the largest delegation, with 11 players, including former world junior champion Wirada Tawinsang and the boys’ national junior squad. Also joining the event is US Kids Pinehurst winner, Nacha Sathitsumpun.

Malaysia and Vietnam will send teams of their top players, while Japan will be represented by Kairi Kurogi and Oshi Shinohara in the 12-and-under category.

“It will be the strongest tournament JGFP is organizing this season. It will give our players a chance to test their skills against our visitors,” said JGFP president Oliver Gan.

The 13-18 division will feature 20 teams, divided into International Open, National Open, and Developmental categories. The local challenge will come from Del Monte, led by Isabella Tabanas and Zero Plete. Nicole Gan will play for Team TGA, reinforced by three Thai players.

For the 12-and-below division, 23 squads are entered, competing in four brackets: Championship 1, Championship 2, Developmental 1 and Developmental 2.

Despite over 170 players already registered, Gan mentioned that a few slots are still open for last-minute entries.

The decision to invite international teams this year is seen as a major step for both the tournament and the Philippine tourism industry. With its lush landscapes and world-class golf courses, the Philippines is increasingly becoming a top destination for global golf enthusiasts.

What began as a local event has grown into one of the country’s most anticipated tournaments, known for its emphasis on sportsmanship and camaraderie.

The inclusion of international teams is expected to raise the tournament’s profile and expand its reach, while boosting the local economy and further establishing the Philippines as a premier golf destination.

“Our goal is to maintain the essence of the tournament while embracing the excitement and energy of international participation,” Gan added.
