A leading advocate for modern public transport is urging Mindanao transport cooperatives and corporations to focus not only on the modernization of their vehicles but also on training their personnel.
In an interview with the DAILY TRIBUNE, Philippine Commercial Vehicle Show (PCVS) general manager Nerza Marie Del Rosario emphasized that the push for modernized road transportation goes beyond simply replacing the country’s aging transport fleet. It requires a substantial investment in talent and ensuring that qualified and trained fleet managers are in place to handle the new systems effectively.
Del Rosario communicated with the Consortium of Mindanao Transport Cooperatives and Corporations, explaining that “vehicles are only as good as the people handling them.” She added, “When adapting to new transport systems, having the right people on the job is essential.”
“Building the right workforce requires not just recruiting based on technical skills but also finding candidates with the right mindset. While technical expertise is important, it is equally essential that candidates are willing to adapt to the evolving transport system,” she noted.
Training is critical for building a skilled and adaptable workforce capable of meeting the demands of a modernized transport system, Del Rosario said.
“It’s vital that drivers and staff are equipped with the right tools to perform their work responsibly and safely. They should serve as role models by adhering to safety policies and traffic rules, as they are a direct reflection of the country’s transport system,” she explained.
Del Rosario also stressed that PCVS advocates for an inclusive and diverse workplace. “This is the kind of environment that our dedicated drivers and staff deserve.”
She added, “Fostering an atmosphere where employees are valued and respected will empower them to thrive. When people feel supported and appreciated, they are motivated to deliver exceptional service to the people they serve.”
To ensure long-term success for modernized transport systems, Del Rosario emphasized the importance of nurturing emerging talents.
“There must be a continuous pipeline of highly skilled fleet managers, staff and technical experts to meet workforce demands. Collaborating with the government to promote career pathways within the Philippines’ transportation system through targeted programs and certifications is essential,” she said.
The Office of Transportation Cooperatives (OTC) is the government agency responsible for conducting Fleet Management System (FMS) training for transport cooperatives. However, due to budget constraints, most transport cooperatives in Mindanao have yet to undergo FMS training. This challenge is compounded by the shortage of qualified OTC personnel to conduct the training.
In response, PCVS will be hosting an event titled “Moving PH Road Transportation to the Future” on 4 July in Manila, where FMS orientation will be offered.
