SM Supermalls once again took part in the global Earth Hour movement led by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), uniting communities in a collective effort for the planet. On 22 March, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., 87 SM malls nationwide turned off non-essential lights, encouraging customers, tenants, and employees to “Give an Hour for Earth” through meaningful sustainability actions.
Having supported Earth Hour for 17 consecutive years, SM Supermalls continues to make a tangible impact. According to PwC Isla Lipana and Co., the energy saved during the one-hour switch-off was equivalent to charging 319,759 smartphones or recycling 1.4 tons of waste. Shoppers also engaged in eco-friendly activities such as live music performances, arts and crafts, and fitness sessions, transforming Earth Hour into an interactive and inspiring event.
"Through Earth Hour and our year-round sustainability programs, SM remains committed to inspiring and enabling communities to take meaningful steps toward environmental conservation," said Engr. Liza B. Silerio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance Group and SM Cares Program Director for Environment and Sustainability.
SM Supermalls’ sustainability efforts extend far beyond Earth Hour. Through SM Cares, initiatives like the Trash to Cash recycling market, Plastic Waste Collection, E-waste Collection, and the International Coastal Cleanup mobilize volunteers to take action against waste pollution. This year, SM also collaborated with students from National University and Asia Pacific College to launch a social media campaign promoting the importance of disconnecting online to reconnect with the environment.
As Earth Hour ends, SM Supermalls continues to champion sustainability, proving that small, everyday choices can spark big changes for the planet.
