Metro Pacific Agro Ventures (MPAV), the agri-food unit of Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC), has launched the country’s largest vegetable greenhouse facility, Metro Pacific Fresh Farms (MPFF), in San Rafael, Bulacan.
The facility, which kicked off its ceremonial maiden harvest on Tuesday, aims to revolutionize local vegetable farming with high-yield, technology-driven production.
In its first phase, MPFF spans 3.5 hectares of greenhouses and is expected to produce up to 500 metric tons of fresh vegetables annually, including 60,000 lettuce heads per month. With yields up to five times higher than traditional farms, the facility ensures a stable, year-round supply of high-quality produce.
“The vision behind these investments is an agriculturally independent Philippines,” MPIC Chairman, President, and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan said. “We want to help build a nation that’s capable of feeding all of its people.”
MPFF’s greenhouse facility is powered by technology from Israel’s LR Group, utilizing modern techniques such as nutrient film systems and drip irrigation to optimize production while using 90 percent less water and land. The controlled environment significantly reduces the need for chemical pesticides and fertilizers, cutting exposure to contaminants by up to 99 percent.
“(MPFF) offers a solution by providing a reliable supply of high-quality fresh produce for all Filipinos, but especially for businesses and retailers that require consistent, high-quality sourcing,” MPAV President and CEO Jovy Hernandez said.
“While 47 percent of the country’s land is agricultural, issues like low output, high input costs, lack of post-harvest facilities, and outdated irrigation systems hinder production. (MPFF) offers a solution by providing a reliable supply of high-quality fresh produce for all Filipinos, but especially for businesses and retailers,” he added.
MPFF has also introduced a new vegetable brand, More Veggies Please, which will be available in Metro Manila through supermarkets, hotels, hospitals, and food service establishments. Expansion to other regions is planned in the coming months.
