Magnificent 7 pushes for jeepney rehab

The Magnificent 7, an alliance of seven major transport groups in the Philippines, is advocating for the rehabilitation of traditional jeepneys for short routes rather than replacing them with modern jeepneys.

Pasang Masda National President Obet Martin, who is also part of the Magnificent 7, emphasized that operators cannot afford the cost of modern jeepneys, even with loan options.

He added that this issue will be discussed in their upcoming meeting with Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon next week.

Meanwhile, Pasang Masda will not be joining the three-day transport strike organized by Manibela from 24-26 March.

According to Martin, a transport strike is not the solution, as it disrupts commuters and negatively impacts the livelihood of jeepney drivers and operators.

The strike is driven by Manibela’s claims that the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has been misleading the public about the government's Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP), particularly regarding figures on public utility vehicle (PUV) consolidation.

Reacting to the planned protest, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) stated that it respects the group’s right to express its grievances.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon has also instructed officials to initiate a dialogue with Manibela as soon as possible.
