DoTr: Expect ‘carmageddon’ amid EDSA rehab

‘Heavy traffic flow is inevitable when EDSA is rehabilitated because this rehab is not piece by piece like in the past’

The Department of Transportation (DoTr) warned Wednesday of heavy traffic during the upcoming rehabilitation of EDSA, set to begin by the end of March.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon disclosed that the department and other agencies are preparing measures to mitigate the expected congestion.

“Heavy traffic flow is inevitable when EDSA is rehabilitated because this rehab is not piece by piece like in the past. This is a full rehab of the entire EDSA,” Dizon said.

“So, we apologize, but we will do everything with the help of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and the Department of Public Works and Highways to ease the traffic there,” he added.

Dizon had previously indicated the repairs could start in April.

The Department of Public Works and Highways-National Capital Region (DPWH-NCR) said the initial phase of the rehabilitation will focus on the northbound portion from the Quezon City/Caloocan boundary to Monumento.

“Following the anticipated major rehabilitation and upgrading of EDSA, the DPWH-NCR is actively preparing to implement the rehabilitation works by segments, one lane at a time, starting from the EDSA bus lane,” the DPWH-NCR said.

The rehabilitation is part of preparations for the Philippines’ hosting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit next year. ENM
