Manila logs lower murder, homicide cases

Manila has a significantly lower crime rate for a city of nearly two million people, according to Mayor Honey Lacuna, citing Manila Police District (MPD) data for the first two months of 2025.

“There were only six murders and two homicides for January and February combined, compared to the 18 in the same months last year,” Lacuna said. “Thefts are down to 58 reported incidents from 69 last year. Robberies are slightly down to 29 from 31.”

Lacuna also stressed the data’s validity.

“These numbers are cold, hard facts. It is safe to live, safe to study, and safe to work in the City of Manila. This is not only an accomplishment of the Lacuna administration, but also of the barangays, the national government, and the national police,” Lacuna said.

The mayor said she is reminding barangay officials to urge local businesses and households to be extra vigilant against thieves and robbers.

“Safety and security measures must be in place. Economic hardships can push people to steal from others,” Lacuna said.

Regarding reported crimes captured by CCTV, Lacuna credited the vigilance of journalists and the city’s extensive surveillance system.

“The reported crimes in Manila that are caught on CCTV are due to the diligence of journalists covering the City of Manila and the wide reach of the CCTV systems in the city. The media is simply doing its job, and we are grateful for the airtime they give our city,” the mayor said.

In an interview with veteran journalist Anthony Taberna, Lacuna said the widespread use of CCTV in Manila has significantly aided crime prevention and resolution.
