'Let’s Hear Her': Amplifying the call for rights, equality, and empowerment

In celebration of International Women’s Day, France Volontaires Philippines hosted an impactful event titled “Let’s Hear Her: Amplifying Her Call for Rights, Equality, and Empowerment” at the Alliance Française de Manille on 7 March 2025. Aligning with the United Nations’ theme for 2025, "For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment," the event served as a platform to address critical issues affecting women and girls in the Philippines, particularly in the areas of sexual and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS awareness, and the rising incidence of teenage pregnancy.

Empowering voices for change

The event brought together a diverse group of experts, advocates, volunteers, and community members to discuss and amplify the voices of women across the country. Through a series of panel discussions and advocacy initiatives, attendees gained a deeper understanding of the systemic challenges that women and girls face, while also exploring solutions that drive lasting change.

The panel discussion was moderated by Nicole Namuco and featured gender and development expert Bernadette Cariaga, who emphasized the importance of inclusive spaces for addressing gender issues. “The most opportune time to come together and establish relationships is from the very beginning — when we identify whose problem it is, who is affected, and whose voices must be heard,” she stated.

ACAY Missions Philippines administrative head Jam Palpallatoc stressed the importance of awareness and collective action. “When everyone is aware, then everyone can contribute. We can collaborate and work together toward achieving the goals for our young women. One day, we will feel empowered, and we will empower each other.”

Cariaga further called for sustainable gender equality efforts, advocating for self-sufficiency beyond international funding. “I hope that one day, gender equality will be naturally integrated into the Philippines' policies and programs, and that we will be properly resourced to continue this work without external assistance. We need government leaders to recognize the value of women’s contributions and ensure their active participation in nation-building.”

Other notable speakers included Women’s Alliance for Security and Peace (WASP) founder Caroline Nacional, WASP executive director Jona Villasante, Médecins du Monde general coordinator Eva Lecat, Culture and Arts Managers of the Philippines (CAMP) volunteer Kath Concepcion, and Life Project 4 Youth project coordinator Valentine Coque.

A call to action

The event concluded with a strong call to action, urging attendees to support local initiatives, hold institutions accountable, and amplify women’s voices in all sectors of society. "Let’s Hear Her" reaffirmed the importance of continuous advocacy, education, and policy change in advancing gender equality. By amplifying the voices of women and girls, fostering dialogue, and pushing for action, events like this pave the way for a more inclusive and just society in the Philippines and beyond.
