In times of crisis, when uncertainty looms and communities are left vulnerable, the SM Foundation emerges as a steadfast ally, swiftly extending aid where it is needed most.
As the corporate social responsibility arm of the SM Group, it has remained unwavering in its commitment to inclusive growth, mobilizing corporate resources and volunteer support to provide relief to underserved communities.
To date, the foundation has distributed an astounding 982,415 Kalinga Packs and spearheaded 783 relief missions, underscoring its indispensable role in disaster response and recovery.
In 2024 alone, in collaboration with SM Supermalls and SM Markets, the Foundation conducted 41 Operation Tulong Express initiatives, distributing over 108,000 Kalinga Packs — each one filled with essential provisions such as mineral water, rice and ready-to-eat meals.
OPTE, the Foundation’s flagship disaster relief initiative, ensures the rapid delivery of aid, including vital medicines and basic necessities, to those most affected by natural calamities.
“The SM Group, through SM Foundation, has been working directly with communities to provide the assistance they need, especially during disasters. By leveraging our corporate assets, we secure and deploy resources efficiently. We are committed to being a responsible neighbor in the communities we serve,” shares SM Foundation executive director Debbie Sy.
This spirit of collaboration extends across the SM Group’s business units. SM Markets swiftly prepares Kalinga Packs, while Airspeed and 2GO assist in logistics.
SM Cares, the sustainability arm of SM Supermalls, mobilizes additional support, with mall employees volunteering their time to distribute aid.
During calamities, SM establishments also transform into safe havens, offering displaced individuals a place to rest and recharge.
Beyond immediate relief, SM Foundation’s commitment to social development runs deep. While its advocacy began with education — championed by its late founder, Henry Sy Sr. — super typhoon “Haiyan” in 2013 marked a turning point, prompting the Foundation to broaden its scope. What began as emergency response evolved into a holistic program encompassing education, healthcare, livelihood, and housing.
From rebuilding fire-damaged schools in Tagbilaran City to rehabilitating Sta. Barbara Central Elementary School in Zamboanga after the 2013 siege, the Foundation remains a steadfast partner in community development.
With over 110 school buildings and 370 classrooms built, along with hygiene and sanitation initiatives, it continues to strengthen local education systems.
Like a good neighbor present in both prosperity and adversity, SM Foundation stands ready to uplift communities — helping them not only to recover but to rebuild stronger than before.
