In a classroom at Tsukuba University of Technology, Deaf students followed their instructor’s signs with focus and determination.

Among the visitors was Ana Kristina Arce, a Deaf educator from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, who understood the importance of accessible education firsthand.

Arce and Oscar Sherlo Reyes, director of Benilde’s Center for External Linkages, traveled to Japan for five days to promote inclusive education for Deaf individuals and Persons with Disabilities.

Their goal was to build academic partnerships and share best practices with Japanese institutions.

At the Kyosaren Conference in Shiga Prefecture, Reyes spoke about disability rights in the Philippines and how the country upholds the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Arce, meanwhile, shared her journey as a Deaf educator, highlighting both her struggles and achievements.

The two also visited Japan’s government-supported programs that help PWDs gain skills and job opportunities.

These included a bakery where PWDs showcased their baking skills and a workshop where Deaf individuals upcycled saddle blankets into bags and accessories.

At NTUT, Japan’s only university for hearing — and visually-impaired students, Reyes and Arce explored possible collaborations, including student and faculty exchanges, joint research and online learning programs.

They also observed a Deaf class to see Japan’s inclusive education in action.

Their visit ended at Hosei University’s Tama Campus, known for its strong support for diversity and inclusion.

Discussions focused on future collaborations, such as an international educational tour and joint courses on Deaf Awareness, Filipino and Japanese Sign Language and disability policy development.

With a memorandum of understanding expected soon, Benilde and Hosei University plan to expand their partnership, aiming to fully implement these initiatives by 2026.

Through these efforts, Benilde continues to strengthen its commitment to inclusive education, ensuring that learning opportunities are open to all.
