Sun out! Shield up!

As the Philippines swelters under the full force of summer (classes were recently canceled due to the searing temperatures [46°C in Metro Manila]), it’s not just beach days and outdoor adventures on the agenda; it’s also a critical reminder that prolonged sun exposure can wreak havoc on your skin.

Experts are urging Filipinos to treat sunscreen as a daily essential, not just a seasonal afterthought.

Dr. Loren Cole Magpantay, dermatologist at One World Skin and Wellness, reminds us at the Watsons Summer Fun 2025 event: Sunscreen isn’t just a luxury, it’s the best defense against the harmful UV rays that come with these blistering days.

Lather up and protect yourself. Your skin will thank you later.

Magpantay emphasizes that “Sunscreen helps prevent sunburn by shielding the skin from excessive UV exposure” reducing the risk of irritation, redness and peeling.

Along with avoiding wrinkles, fine lines and dark spots, it also reduces skin damage that might result in uneasy problems.

Moreover, it provides protection from UVB rays, which result in sunburn, as well as UVA rays, which cause skin aging. A vital component of any skincare regimen, sunscreen dramatically reduces the risk of skin cancer by preventing dangerous rays.

Not all sunscreens are created equal, so choosing the right one is crucial for effective protection. Dermatologists recommend looking for broad-spectrum formulas that block both UVA and UVB rays.

The SPF level also matters — SPF 30 or higher is ideal for daily wear, while SPF 50+ is best for extended outdoor exposure. To maintain protection, sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating. Water-resistant options are a must for beach days or intense outdoor activities, and whether you prefer lotions, sprays, or sticks, the best sunscreen is the one that suits your skin type and lifestyle.

Proper application is just as important as choosing the right sunscreen. Many people forget to cover often-missed areas such as the ears, the back of the neck, and the tops of the feet. Lips also need protection, so using an SPF lip balm is recommended, while those with thinning hair should apply sunscreen on the scalp or wear a hat.

Reapplication is key, especially every two hours or more frequently when sweating or swimming. For those who wear makeup, SPF-infused setting sprays or powder sunscreens make reapplication easier throughout the day.

Sunscreen is your skin’s best friend during the hottest months in the Philippines. Whether you’re hitting the beach, running errands, attending events, or heading to school or work, sun protection is non-negotiable.
