Olango carrying fight for Fighting Maroons

Kianne Olango may be wearing different colors in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament, but one thing remains the same — her undeniable talent.

From being a standout at NU Nazareth School to emerging as the present and future of University of the Philippines (UP), Olango continues to prove her worth on the court.

Despite UP’s 11-25, 23-25, 25-23, 12-25 loss to the University of Santo Tomas (UST), the young opposite hitter once again led her squad, finishing with a game-high 18 points built on 14 attacks, two blocks, and two aces.

“It’s really the drive to win. I really want to help UP rise,” Olango said.

The former juniors champion and Most Valuable Player has become a key contributor for the Fighting Maroons, averaging 12.2 points per game. However, the Fighting Maroons’ 2-3 win-loss record places them at sixth in the team standings, prompting them to find consistency after suffering their third consecutive loss.

Adding to the Fighting Maroons’ woes was the absence of Season 86’s 2nd Best Middle Blocker, Niña Ytang, who was sidelined due to illness.

While the Fighting Maroons are facing a tough stretch, Olango remains a beacon of hope, especially with key transferees — Casiey Dongallo, Kizzie Madriaga and Jelai Gajero — still undergoing a one-year residency before suiting up in Season 88.

If the Fighting Maroons return to their former glory, Olango will definitely be a cornerstone of that resurgence.

For now, however, UP is focused on breaking its slump and getting back into playoff contention.

“It’s really about our mindset and hunger every time we step into the venue and play,” Olango said when asked about the team’s struggles.

“But I know the capabilities of our team.”

UP’s campaign continues on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena as it faces an undefeated NU squad at 1 p.m., for a crucial win that will help regain its shattered morale.
