ZAMBOANGA CITY — At least 17 high-powered loose firearms were surrendered by civilian gun holders to the military in Pikit town in Cotabato after soldiers of the 40th Infantry (Magiting) Battalion intensified their campaign on loose firearms in collaboration with various government agencies.
Joint Task Force-Central Commander Brig. Gen. Donald M. Gumiran said yesterday civilian gun holders voluntarily surrendered their unlicensed firearms to the 40th IB in Barangay Ladtingan in Pikit on Tuesday.
Among the surrendered weapons were four 7.62mm M14 rifles; a 5.56mm Ultimax; two Cal .45 pistols; two 5.56mm M16 Elisco rifles; three Cal .30 M1 guns; a Cal .30 Carbine; three RLL RPGs; a 9mm UZI pistol and a bandoliers containing magazines and ammunition.
Residents of Tugunan and Kapalawan in the Special Geographic Area of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and Matalam town in Cotabato surrendered the guns.
According to Gumiran, the surrender of firearms was a result of the military’s intensified campaign against loose firearms through law enforcement support operations, in collaboration with various government agencies.
Additionally, he said, it is also part of the Small Arms and Light Weapons Management Program, which aims to eradicate the spread of illegal weapons in the community.
Gumiran also emphasized the importance of the people’s solidarity in promoting peace in the region.
“Your voluntary surrender of firearms is a big step towards a safer and more peaceful community,” he said.
"We will continue to work hard, together with our partners in the government and local community, to curb the spread of illegal weapons and maintain order in our region," the commander of the 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division and Joint Task Force Central said.
Gumiran continues to encourage any individuals or groups still in possession of loose firearms to voluntarily surrender them to avoid possible charges being filed against them.
