On Wednesday, 27 February 2025, Game Freak, the renowned developers behind the long-running Pokémon video game series, unveiled the highly anticipated trailer for Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, the game marks the latest addition to the beloved franchise, which has captivated players worldwide since its debut in 1996.

A return to Kalos

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is a part of the ninth generation of Pokémon games, joining the ranks of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. More significantly, it serves as a spiritual successor to Pokémon X and Y, the mainline games that first introduced players to the Kalos region in 2013. Fans of the series will once again explore Lumiose City, the sprawling metropolis inspired by Paris, which is undergoing a "high-tech urban redevelopment" led by a corporation known as Quasartico.

As the second entry in the Pokémon Legends subseries — following the critically acclaimed Pokémon Legends: Arceus — this new installment promises to offer a fresh perspective on the Kalos region while expanding on gameplay mechanics that set Legends apart from traditional mainline titles.

True to modern Pokémon design philosophy, Pokémon Legends: Z-A will continue to feature full 3D exploration, deviating from the classic 2D top-down graphics that characterized earlier generations. With its urban setting and technological themes, the game is expected to push the franchise’s graphical and world-building capabilities further, offering a vibrant and immersive experience for players on the Nintendo Switch.

Classic starters, legendary gameplay

As with every Pokémon adventure, trainers will have the opportunity to choose from three starter Pokémon to begin their journey. In a surprising twist, Game Freak has opted to bring back a mix of past starters rather than introducing an entirely new trio. Players will have the choice between: Chikorita, Tepig, or Totodile

This unique selection spans across multiple generations, giving longtime fans a nostalgic throwback while allowing new players to experience these classic Pokémon in a new setting.

The return of mega evolution

One of the most exciting aspects of Pokémon Legends: Z-A is the return of the Mega Evolution mechanic. Originally introduced in Pokémon X and Y, Mega Evolution allows certain Pokémon to undergo temporary transformations in battle, granting them enhanced stats and sometimes even a new ability or type. The teaser trailer hinted at the comeback of this fan-favorite feature, sparking speculation about potential new Mega Evolutions exclusive to this game.

Release

Game Freak has confirmed that Pokémon Legends: Z-A is slated for release in late 2025. While the exact release date remains undisclosed, excitement is already building among fans eager to revisit Kalos in a new light. With its blend of nostalgia and innovation, the game is poised to be a major highlight of the Pokémon franchise’s ongoing evolution.

Stay tuned for further updates as Game Freak reveals more about this ambitious reimagining of the Kalos region.
