Pope Francis remains in critical condition at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital as he continues treatment for a complex lung infection, the Vatican confirmed Sunday.
The 88-year-old pontiff, who was admitted on 14 February due to worsening bronchitis, is receiving high-flow oxygen therapy and blood transfusions. Doctors describe his prognosis as "reserved," citing his age and pre-existing lung disease.
Despite his condition, the pope shared a message with followers through social media.
"I have recently received many messages of affection, and I have been particularly struck by the letters and drawings from children," he posted on X. "Thank you for your closeness, and for the consoling prayers I have received from all over the world!"
Pope Francis’ language echoed a homily prepared for Sunday’s Holy Mass for the Jubilee of Deacons, which Archbishop Rino Fisichella read on his behalf. In the homily, the pope urged deacons to continue their apostolate with joy and to be "a sign of a love that embraces everyone, that transforms evil into goodness and engenders a fraternal world."
The Vatican reported that the pope remains conscious but continues to receive high-flow oxygen. His condition took a critical turn on Saturday following a prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis. Vatican officials said he is being closely monitored, with additional medical tests ongoing.
Monday marks the third anniversary of the large-scale war in Ukraine, which Pope Francis addressed in his prepared statement. Calling it "a painful and shameful occasion for all humanity," he reiterated his solidarity with the suffering Ukrainian people and called for prayers for peace in conflict zones, including Palestine, Israel, Myanmar, Kivu, and Sudan.
The Holy See Press Office said Francis spent Saturday in an armchair but was in "more discomfort than yesterday." Officials have not commented on whether the Pope may step down if his health deteriorates further, but speculation continues regarding potential succession plans.
As the Vatican prepares to release further updates, Pope Francis has asked for continued prayers, entrusting followers to the intercession of Mary. "I entrust everyone to the intercession of Mary and ask you to pray for me," he said in his statement.
