Japan's cultural impact on the Philippines: A celebration of shared traditions

Pamela Pascual

As Japan prepares to celebrate Emperor Naruhito’s birthday on 23 February, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on the profound cultural influences Japan has imparted to the Philippines over the years. Despite the relatively brief period of Japanese occupation during World War II from 1941 to 1945, the cultural exchange between the two nations has been both significant and enduring.

Culinary traditions

Japanese cuisine has found a special place in the hearts of Filipinos. Dishes such as sushi, ramen, tonkatsu and tempura are widely enjoyed and have been integrated into the local food scene. The appreciation for Japanese culinary arts is evident in the numerous Japanese restaurants and food stalls across the Philippines. A notable location people should visit is the Little Tokyo area in Makati City, which features Japanese-themed shops and restaurants decorated with Japanese aesthetics.

Entertainment and media

The influence of Japanese pop culture is particularly prominent in the Philippines. Anime series have garnered a massive following among Filipino audiences, with shows like Voltes V becoming cultural icons. First aired in 1978, Voltes V resonated deeply with Filipino youth and even became a symbol of resistance during political upheavals.  Other anime series streamed on Filipino television channels are Naruto, Slam Dunk, and Doraemon. Additionally, karaoke, a popular pastime originating from Japan, has become a favorite activity in Filipino social gatherings, and even just as a hobby or pastime.

Automotive advances

Japanese luxury car brands have established a strong presence in the Philippine market. Notably, Lexus, Toyota’s premium division, has become a dominant force. In 2023, Lexus surpassed other luxury brands, achieving the highest sales among premium car manufacturers in the country. This success underscores Filipino consumers’ trust in Japanese engineering and design.

Other Japanese luxury car brands, such as Infiniti (Nissan’s luxury line) and Acura (Honda’s premium brand), have also contributed to the diverse automotive products in the Philippines. These brands offer a range of vehicles that combine performance, luxury, and reliability, catering to the discerning preference of Filipino car enthusiasts.

Fashion influence

The influence of Japanese fashion in the Philippines is evident through the presence of several luxury brands. SNIDEL and FRAY I.D., renowned for their innovative designs and quality craftsmanship, have recently opened stores in Metro Manila, offering Filipino consumers access to contemporary Japanese fashion.

Additionally, the @Tokyo retail concept brings together a curated selection of Japanese fashion and lifestyle brands under one roof, providing a unique shopping experience that celebrates Japanese aesthetics and culture.

As Filipino consumers continue to embrace Japanese products and trends, the influence of Japan’s rich heritage and modern innovations becomes increasingly woven into the fabric of Philippine society.

This firmly proves that the Japanese cultural influence on the Philippines is multifaceted, encompassing areas such as cuisine, entertainment, fashion, technology, and education. This rich tapestry of shared cultural elements continues to enrich Filipino society, reflecting a harmonious blend of traditions and innovations.
