Volleyball holds a special place in Senator Christopher “Bong” Go’s heart.
Go, head of the Senate Committee on Sports, continues to advance the development of volleyball in the country by providing crucial support for local tournaments and grassroots programs.
Through his efforts with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), they facilitated financial support for key volleyball events, including the staging of not just volleyball but basketball leagues in Salug, Zamboanga del Norte as requested by Mayor William Maribojoc.
This initiative helped sustain a beloved community tradition, where local athletes showcased their skills and fostered sportsmanship.
Additionally, Senator Go championed the UNTV Volleyball League, following a request from Rheena Camara of the UNTV Sports Team. The UNTV Volleyball League has become a platform for both professional and amateur athletes to compete while promoting volleyball to a broader audience.
“Just like what I have been the youth, let us all play sports and avoid drugs so we could all be fit and healthy,” he said.
Go’s push for lasting reforms in sports development extends beyond immediate support for local tournaments.
His legislative efforts reflect a clear vision for grassroots development and long-term sports excellence.
A key achievement was his role in creating the National Academy of Sports (NAS) by authoring and co-sponsoring Republic Act 11470.
Built-in New Clark City, Capas, Tarlac, the NAS offers a secondary education curriculum integrated with specialized sports training, providing young athletes with a dual pathway for academic and athletic success.
This initiative highlights Go’s commitment to ensuring that student-athletes are equipped for life both on and off the court.
Go has likewise played a vital role in securing resources essential for sports development. His efforts have funded improvements to key sports facilities, such as the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila and the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
