President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. assured the victims of Kanlaon Volcano on Thursday that the government will continue its support, especially for those displaced by volcanic activity.
Reports from the provincial government of Negros Occidental reveal that more than 1,700 families remain in evacuation centers, with some temporarily staying at La Carlota City South Elementary School II. Others have sought shelter with friends and relatives.
“You can count on us, your government, not to abandon you. We will send you everything you need, all the supplies, all the relief goods,” Marcos said, addressing evacuees.
The President emphasized that the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is actively managing the situation, including plans to build additional evacuation centers to alleviate overcrowding. He also assured farmers that support would be provided for lost and damaged crops.
“We will do everything, and no matter how long it takes, your government is here,” Marcos emphasized.
In addition, the President led the distribution of financial assistance, providing P5,000 to 323 families, or 1,111 individuals, in La Carlota City. The DSWD also distributed family food packs to evacuees.
Secretary Renato Solidum of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) briefed the President on the current situation of Kanlaon Volcano, warning of the possibility of a “larger eruption.” Kanlaon was raised to Alert Level 3 by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology in December 2024.
Since the eruption in 2024, 12,603 families have been displaced, with 57 localities in Western and Central Visayas placed under a State of Calamity.
