Gilas stun Qatar after 4th quarter comeback

Gilas Pilipinas completed a fourth quarter comeback to beat Qatar, 74-71, in the Doha International Cup early Saturday (Manila time) at the QU Sports & Events Complex

Down 58-66 with 7:30 left in the game, Justin Brownlee and AJ Edu went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to one.

Michael Lewis II then buried a triple with 3:54 remaining in the game to extend the Qataris' lead to three, 69-65.

A fadeaway jumper from Dwight Ramos with 3:29 left on the clock ignited  a 7-0 blitz as Gilas took the lead, 72-69.

Tyler Harris answered back with with a layup with 20 seconds left on the clock to inch closer to Gilas, 71-72, but wasn't able to convert the bonus free throw.

Scottie Thompson was fouled by Mohammed Abbasher with 16.7 seconds left  on the clock and calmly sank two free throws for the lead.

Lewis failed to convert a long triple in the dying seconds of the match as Gilas escaped with the win.

Ramos led Gilas with 15 points behind a 5-of-10 shooting clip while June Mar Fajardo had 12 points, seven rebounds, and two assists.

Harris finished with 17 points in a losing effort.

Gilas will face Lebanon on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the same venue.


The Cedars are coming off a 82-70 win over Egypt but could play without star players Wael Arakji and Omari Spellman.
