A nation’s spirit abroad

Sri Lanka’s independence is a living, breathing force, carried in the hearts of its people wherever they go.

At the official residence of the Sri Lankan Ambassador in the Philippines, a hundred voices recently joined in singing the national anthem, their hearts tethered to a homeland that, despite the miles, felt as near as ever.

The occasion was the 77th Independence Day of Sri Lanka, a milestone marked with solemnity and celebration.

At the heart of the ceremony was Ambassador Dr. Chanaka Talpahewa, who led a moment of silence — two minutes of remembering the countless souls who had fought, bled and died for Sri Lanka’s freedom.

The ceremony was also a testament to unity, faith and resilience.

The flames of a traditional oil lamp, kindled by spiritual leaders from Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, and Muslim communities, cast a warm glow over the gathering, their prayers, spoken in different tongues but carrying the same intent, wove together a tapestry of harmony — an unspoken pledge that no matter one’s faith, Sri Lanka’s spirit was indivisible.

Ven. Gandowawila Chandima, representing the Theravāda Buddhist tradition, led a special blessing, invoking wisdom, peace, and prosperity for Sri Lanka and its people, both at home and abroad.

The Independence Day messages of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, and Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath were read aloud in Sinhala, Tamil and English.

Each language, like each faith represented earlier, underscored the nation’s diversity — a mosaic of cultures, histories and aspirations stitched together by a common dream of progress.

A screening of “Clean Sri Lanka,” a national program dedicated to environmental stewardship, offered a glimpse into the country’s ongoing efforts to blend development with sustainability.

Promotional videos highlighted trade opportunities, economic initiatives, and the resilience of a nation determined to thrive.

As tradition dictates, celebration followed ceremony. Tables laden with fragrant Sri Lankan dishes welcomed the guests, their flavors a comforting taste of home for some, a delightful discovery for others.
