Halalan2025: Senatorial bets who withdrew their candidacy

Ann Jenireene Gomez

As the 2025 Philippine midterm elections approach, the political landscape continues to shift, with several senatorial candidates announcing their withdrawal from the race. These withdrawals, driven by personal circumstances, strategic decisions, and logistical challenges, have altered the lineup of contenders vying for a seat in the Senate.

Doc Willie Ong

On 13 February, renowned cardiologist and social media personality Dr. Willie Ong announced his withdrawal from the senatorial race, citing health concerns related to his battle with cancer.

Ong, who gained national recognition for his medical advocacy and extensive online following, shared the decision through his official Facebook page, where he expressed deep gratitude to his supporters.

"I am officially withdrawing my candidacy for the 2025 elections. So I can focus more on taking care of my health," Ong stated in his post. “I will continue to support good governance and the candidates who espouse the same ideals as mine. Our advocacy to help the poor Filipinos continues even in my private capacity,” he added.

Ong had previously ran for vice president in the 2022 elections, garnering significant support despite facing more established political figures. His exit from the 2025 race leaves a gap in the roster of independent candidates advocating for healthcare reform.

Wilbert T. Lee

On 10 February 2025, businessman and former congressman Wilbert T. Lee announced his withdrawal from the Senate race, citing a lack of political machinery. Lee, known for his work in agriculture and small business development, acknowledged the difficulties of mounting a nationwide campaign without the backing of a major political party.

“This has been a very difficult decision for me, especially because I believe that I could make a difference in fighting for my advocacies in the Senate. But after a contemplative prayer and consultation, I believe this is the right thing to do at this time,” Lee explained in his official statement.

Many of his supporters expressed disappointment but commended his honesty in acknowledging the logistical hurdles.

Francis Leo Marcos

On 23 January 2025, Francis Leo Marcos, a businessman and social media influencer who previously ran in the 2022 elections, withdrew his candidacy. His decision came shortly after the Supreme Court issued temporary restraining orders preventing the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) from excluding certain aspirants from the ballot, including Marcos.

Despite the legal developments, Marcos chose to step away from the race, citing the need to avoid prolonged legal battles and uncertainty.

“My main reason for backing out is to prevent the government from spending another P132 million for my ballots. If I allow them to shred 6 million ballots that have already been printed, I won’t consider myself a good person. I’m not a good Samaritan for nothing,” he stated.

Chavit Singson

On 14 January 2025, seasoned politician and businessman Chavit Singson announced his withdrawal from the senatorial race. The announcement came as COMELEC finalized adjustments to the official ballot, with Singson's name being among those removed due to other legal considerations.

Singson, a former governor of Ilocos Sur and a key political figure in past administrations, did not provide a detailed reason for his withdrawal. However, sources close to him suggested that internal party dynamics and strategic considerations played a role in his decision.
