Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Endo Kazuya has expressed honor at participating in the Exchange of Notes for Japan’s Grant Aid “Economic and Social Development Program,” focused on Open Radio Access Networks, or Open RAN.
Endo highlighted the significance of Open RAN in an age of rapid digitization, emphasizing its importance for a country’s success and competitiveness.
Open RAN, according to Endo, facilitates innovation by enabling segmented RAN processes and fostering competition in network systems architecture. As an alternative to relying on a single vendor, Open RAN allows for more players in key services and provides greater control in network management.
This, in turn, can lead to increased accessibility and lower costs in vital sectors, including 5G operations and telecommunications infrastructure.
The project, the official noted, demonstrates a commitment to stronger cooperation on Information and Communications Technology, echoing the Joint Vision Statement made during the Japan-US-Philippines Summit in April 2024.
Since then, the importance of promoting Open RAN has been discussed on various occasions, including the bilateral Foreign Ministers’ Meeting between Japan and the Philippines last month, the recent Leaders’ Meeting between Japan and the United States and the Trilateral Cyber-Digital Dialogue last October in Singapore.
Endo stressed that the promise of Open RAN begins with the establishment of a dedicated laboratory at the University of the Philippines.
With its potential for seamless discoveries, the official expressed hope that the project’s success will strengthen the case for Open RAN and its application throughout the country.
