The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and the Japan B.League are planning an exciting exhibition game in Manila this year.
PBA chairman Ricky Vargas discussed the ongoing collaboration talks during the league’s 50th anniversary logo unveiling last Monday.
“We are going to have games with the B.League of Japan,” said Vargas, revealing the two leagues’ project, which was supposed to remain secret until finalized.
PBA commissioner Willie Marcial confirmed the development but declined to divulge further details although he mentioned that the game will be hosted by the country.
“We have plans. We already had initial talks with the B.League but they want to keep it under wraps for now. But we have plans to hold an exhibition game, we’re still looking at it,” Marcial said.
Playing against each other is nothing new to PBA and B.League clubs as they have already crossed paths in the East Asia Super League.
Marcial added that other countries are also interested in collaborating with the PBA — the first professional basketball league in Asia.
“Other countries like Mongolia and Korea have also expressed interest but as of now, we’re moving forward with the B.League for a collaboration,” he said.
While the PBA is the pro cage pioneer in the continent, the Japan B.League, established in 2016, is one of the top leagues in Asia and has been a prime destination for Filipino rising stars which include the likes of Gilas Pilipinas members Kai Sotto, Dwight Ramos and AJ Edu.
Although other Asian pro leagues have gained popularity in recent years, the PBA strives to remain the gold standard in sports entertainment in the region.
“In order for us to stay the best, we have to lead Asia not only in (playing) basketball but in organizing (leagues in) Asia,” Vargas said.
“That’s very important for us because we are the seat of basketball (in Asia).”
