The aviation industry is often criticized for its carbon footprint, but airlines like Cebu Pacific (CEB) is shifting the narrative.

The Gokongwei-led budget carrier has recorded its highest-ever Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance in 2024 with an S&P Global ESG Score of 46. That makes CEB one the world’s most sustainable airlines, proving that responsible air travel is more than an aspiration — a reality in motion.

“Our latest S&P Global ESG score is our best yet. More than just a milestone, it reflects our meaningful progress toward a sustainable future,” CEB president and chief commercial officer Xander Lao said.

The S&P Global is one of few organizations that assesses corporate sustainability to determine a company’s ESG Score. It evaluates how companies manage sustainability risks, seize opportunities and contribute to a more responsible global economy.

CEB’s biggest ESG improvement came from its environmental efforts, with its score jumping from 26 to 43 — a remarkable 17-point increase. It reflects the airline’s commitment to reducing emissions, improving fuel efficiency, and minimizing environmental impact.

The airline has strengthened its climate strategy, refining policies and accelerating decarbonization efforts. It continues to optimize fleet operations, manage water and energy consumption, and enhance waste disposal practices.

CEB has been investing in next-generation aircraft that are more fuel-efficient and emit fewer emissions. It has also taken steps toward using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which could significantly reduce its carbon footprint over time.

Beyond going green

Sustainability isn’t just about preserving the environment. It’s also about people and taking care of their welfare. CEB’s social performance score of 51 points is well above the airline industry’s average of 44.

The airline has built a reputation for prioritizing fair labor practices, strict safety compliance, and strong workforce management. Passenger safety and data protection remain at the core of its operations, ensuring that CEB moves people responsibly.

CEB’s workforce programs have also contributed to its high social score. The airline emphasizes employee well-being, professional development, and inclusivity, fostering a work culture that values performance and people. All these translate into better service and a safer, more comfortable travel experience.

Strong governance

Beyond environmental and social efforts, CEB has improved corporate governance, with its score rising to 43. The increase reflects stronger risk and crisis management, enhanced cybersecurity measures, and a firm commitment to ethical business practices and transparency.

For CEB, good governance isn’t just about compliance but a long-term sustainability effort to safeguard its business from cybersecurity threats, regulatory shifts, and economic challenges.

With a strong focus on reducing its carbon footprint, prioritizing fair labor practices and strengthening governance, CEB shows that flying responsibly isn’t just possible — it’s happening now. Each takeoff is a step toward a cleaner, more sustainable aviation.
