The shear line, or the weather system is formed due to the convergence of the cold air from the northeast monsoon, and warm air from the easterlies, is expected to bring heavy rains over Southern Luzon and Eastern Visayas until this weekend.
According to the weather advisory issued last Friday, heavy to intense rainfall is expected over Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, and Northern Samar until Saturday, while light to moderate rainfall is forecast for the Mimaropa region, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Aklan, Capiz, Masbate, Samar and Eastern Samar.
From Saturday to Sunday noon, Quezon and Camarines Norte might experience heavy to intense rainfall while light to moderate rains are possible over Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque and Camarines Sur.
The 24-hour hydrological forecast also recorded 120 millimeters of rainfall in Malabog, Daraga, Albay, and 115 millimeters in Libon, Albay.
Due to the heavy rains, several towns in Albay, Sorsogon and Catanduanes suspended their in-person classes at all levels.
Knee-deep floodwaters also affected Dolores, Eastern Samar and Catubig, Northern Samar.
Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration weather specialist Grace Castañeda said that moderate to heavy to at times intense rains are possible over the Calabarzon and Bicol Region due to the effects of the shear line.
A gale warning was also imposed on the northern and eastern seaboards of Catanduanes, and the northern and eastern coasts of Northern Samar and the eastern coast of Eastern Samar.
“We are not allowing the fishermen and small boats due to the rough sea conditions,” Castañeda added.
Aside from the shear line, the northeast monsoon also brings isolated rains over Northern Luzon, Central Luzon and Metro Manila.
“Today and in the coming days, the northeast monsoon is expected to strengthen and will bring cold weather in Luzon.”
Last Friday, the temperature in Baguio City reached 16.2°C.
