Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin defended the General Appropriations Act amid calls of the clergy to the Catholic faithful to become ‘lights of hope’ by rejecting the 2025 national budget as it is driven by ayuda or financial assistance which “breeds corruption and patronage politics, especially in the upcoming midterm elections.”
The clergy called for a budget that works toward programs that really empower people.
“Having undergone adjustments permitted by law, the funds will be released transparently and in accordance with good governance principles and laws,” Bersamin said in a statement.
He stressed that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. redirected bilions to projects and programs that create social good, spur progress, and serve the welfare of the people.
“There are now stricter conditionalities for budget releases, ensuring alignment with national priorities and protection from partisan interests,” he noted.
