Pops and Martin: A love story that transcended time

Jefferson Fernando

They were showbiz royalty, a power couple whose chemistry ignited the concert stage. Martin Nievera and Pops Fernandez, two titans of Philippine music, captivated audiences with their voices and undeniable charm. Their 1986 wedding was a fairy-tale affair, a culmination of a romance that blossomed on the set of Penthouse Live.

But like many fairy tales, theirs had a darker chapter. Their marriage, though blessed with two sons, ultimately ended in 1996. While the separation was undoubtedly tumultuous, it did not extinguish the embers of their professional partnership.

“After the split, we stopped sharing the stage,” Nievera recalled. “But in 2004, we dared to reunite for a concert. The response was overwhelming – two sold-out shows at the Araneta Coliseum. That’s a testament to the enduring magic we share.”

Today, their relationship has evolved. The bitterness has faded, replaced by a deep respect and genuine affection.

“We’re in the best place we’ve ever been,” Fernandez affirmed. “We’ve become something we never imagined – true friends.”

Fernandez candidly admitted her initial apprehension about sharing the stage again. “I was anxious,” she confessed. “But performing with Martin is effortless. He makes it easy.”

A legacy of music and memories

Nievera, dubbed the “Concert King,” boasts a platinum-selling career spanning decades. His voice has resonated in iconic venues worldwide, from the Hollywood Bowl to the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Fernandez, the “Concert Queen,” has captivated audiences with her own string of sold-out shows and a successful foray into fashion and film.

At a recent media conference for their upcoming concert, “Always and Forever,” the duo reminisced about their journey.

“Back then, it wasn’t funny,” Nievera shared, referring to their separation. “But now, we can talk about it with lightness. We want to show people that it’s okay. Life happens. And who knows, you might even end up performing together again!”

Pops chuckled, acknowledging the enduring affection of their fans: “Team Hopia still hopes for a reconciliation. But we’re not leading them on. What you see is what you get: a deep respect and a genuine friendship.”

Beyond the stage: A shared family

Their bond extends beyond the stage. As doting grandparents to their eldest son Robin’s child, Finn, they’ve found a renewed sense of purpose and shared joy.

“We’re equally excited to be with him,” Pops beamed. “He’s so musical! He listens intently during our rehearsals and then falls asleep. Maybe it’s a sign he’ll be a singer, too!”

The show must go on

Reflecting on their enduring partnership, Martin emphasized the importance of professionalism.

“The minute you step on stage, you entertain the audience,” Pops echoed, recalling the wisdom of the late director Fritz Ynfante. “They don’t know your personal struggles.”

“We’re living examples of ‘The Show Must Go On,’” Nievera added. “We’ve faced challenges, but the music always prevails. We complement each other effortlessly. It’s a testament to years of experience.”

“Always and Forever” is more than just a concert; it’s a celebration of their enduring legacy, a testament to the power of music and the enduring strength of the human spirit. As they prepare to grace the stage once again, one thing is certain: the magic of Pops and Martin continues to captivate audiences.

“Always and Forever” happens on 7 February, 8 p.m., at the SM MOA Arena.
