Checkpoint evasion leads to P2.3-M drug haul

ARAYAT, Pampanga — A 39-year-old man who tried to escape a checkpoint in Barangay Mapalad led to his arrest and the confiscation of P2.3 million worth of drugs last Friday.

According to Police Regional Office 3 (PRO3) Regional Director Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo, the suspect identified as Bert was flagged down at a PNP-Comelec checkpoint at around 11:50 p.m. on 16 January.

The 39-year-old resident of Cabiao, Nueva Ecija sped away towards Arayat town proper, prompting police to initiate a hot pursuit operation.

The pursuit ended with the suspect’s apprehension in Barangay Plazang Luma, where authorities found approximately 334 grams of a white crystalline substance, believed to be shabu, in plain view. The confiscated drugs have an estimated street value of P2,271,200.

The suspect now faces charges of disobedience to a person in authority and violations of Sections 11 and 12, Article II of Republic Act 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Director Fajardo commended the timely response of the checkpoint personnel and the pursuing officers.

“This operation proves the critical role that checkpoints play in ensuring the safety of our communities. It sends a clear message that our law enforcement personnel are vigilant, proactive, and resolute in the fight against crime, particularly illegal drugs. We will continue to strengthen our efforts to safeguard the public, especially this critical election period.”

She added, “This arrest demonstrates our commitment to enforcing election regulations and dismantling illegal drug networks, ensuring a safer and more secure region for all.”
