The police initially estimated more than one million Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) members gathered at the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park, Manila, on Monday for the National Rally for Peace. However, an update from the Manila Police District around 10 a.m. raised the estimate to 1.5 million, with attendees arriving from nearby provinces, including Cavite, Quezon, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, and Zambales.
The arrival of INC members, who traveled by passenger buses and private vehicles, began around 4 a.m. from various areas in Manila and nearby provinces.
Upon arrival, INC members started their initial programs at the Quirino Grandstand, where police reported that the situation remained peaceful.
"As of 10 a.m., the crowd is estimated to have reached 1.5 million. It is still increasing," the police said.
Preparations for the religious gathering began over the weekend, with police and K-9 units deployed in the area. Portable toilets were also set up at the venue.
Before the rally, the religious group announced the event would show support for President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s opposition to the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte.
At least three impeachment complaints have been filed against Duterte, all alleging misuse of public funds. She has denied the allegations.
"There are many more things which our citizens need that must be attended to. These will not be achieved if all we see taking place is conflict. Perhaps our countrymen, who also desire peace and want our leaders to take care of the needs of our nation, will not contradict the opinion given by President Marcos Jr.,” INC spokesperson Edwil Zabala said.
Malacañang expressed hope that the "National Rally for Peace" would help clarify the issues the country is currently facing.
Members of the religious group at the Quirino Grandstand on Monday morning called for unity and peace amid the country’s political divisions.
Many participants said they joined the rally with the hope that the country would find unity once more under the leadership of Marcos and Duterte.
The nationwide rally is being held simultaneously at 13 sites across the country, with approximately 1 million people expected to participate.
