The Manila Police District (MPD) launched checkpoints across the city on Sunday morning as the election period officially began and a nationwide gun ban took effect.
During an evening formation last Saturday, MPD director PBGen. Thomas Ibay instructed his officers on the proper conduct of checkpoints, which began at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday.
Ibay directed all 14 police stations in the city to establish checkpoints to ensure effective enforcement of the gun ban during the election period.
“We have marked vehicles with signage indicating the team leader’s name, our personnel manning the checkpoints are in proper uniform and wearing their nameplates, and our checkpoints are located in well-lit areas at night,” Ibay said.
He also stressed a courteous approach to all motorists, including car drivers, truck drivers, public utility vehicle passengers and motorcycle riders.
Ibay appealed to the public to cooperate with authorities to avoid any misunderstandings.
The checkpoints are being implemented to ensure a peaceful and orderly election.
