HBO’s The Last of Us will return with its second season in April 2025. A teaser trailer, released in September, offered a first glimpse of Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Catherine O’Hara’s mysterious role, and Jeffrey Wright and Isabela Merced in character.

Co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann revealed that Season 2 will feature seven episodes, fewer than the first season’s nine. However, the creators assured fans that the shorter season will maintain high-quality storytelling, with every episode feeling “like its own blockbuster.”

“The story material from Part II of the game is way more extensive than the first game,” Mazin explained in an interview with Deadline. “From the start, we had to figure out how to tell that story across multiple seasons.”

Mazin confirmed plans for a third season, as The Last of Us Part II game’s narrative requires more time to fully explore.

“When you do that, you look for natural breakpoints, and for this season, the natural breakpoint felt like it came after seven episodes,” he said.

Season 2 will adapt The Last of Us Part II game, released in 2020 by Naughty Dog, continuing the story of a post-apocalyptic world twenty years after modern civilization’s collapse. Themes of unconditional love and revenge will remain central to the narrative.

“This season is a continuation of love from the first, but it explores the dark side of that love—the pursuit of justice at any cost and the consequences of those actions,” Druckmann shared.

Fans can look forward to an intense and gripping continuation of the hit series, staying true to the emotional depth and complexity of the source material.
