Residents of Mogpog, Marinduque, have raised concerns over flooding in their area caused by continuous rainfall on Thursday, which submerged many homes.
While the streets remain passable, vehicles faced difficulty navigating knee-deep floodwaters.
“Nagising an lang ako nang 1:30 a.m. tapos nag-start na magkaroon ng tubig sa kalye,” Cynthia Villaster, a resident of Villa Mendez, told DAILY TRIBUNE.
(I woke up at 1:30 a.m. and the water started rising in the streets.)
According to Villaster, the relentless rains, which began Thursday afternoon and continued into the night, caused the flooding. She also noted that high tide in nearby coastal areas may have exacerbated the situation.
Frustrated netizens voiced concerns over the "unfinished" flood control project by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), which they claim contributed to the flooding.
“Walang bagyo pero bumaha. Bakit? Noong una naman, kahit bumabagyo, ‘di bumabaha nang ganyan. Bakit walang ginawa para ma-solusyunan ito? Please, maawa naman kayo sa mga taong napipinsala,” commented one Facebook user.
(There was no storm, but it flooded. Why? At first, even when there was a storm, it didn’t flood like that. Why hasn’t anything been done to fix this? Please, have mercy on the people who are suffering.)
In April 2024, the agency completed the construction of a 366-meter flood control structure along Mogpog River in Barangay Sumangga. This revetment structure was designed to direct water flow toward the sea, preventing flooding in the low-lying barangay during the rainy season, as explained by District Engineer Ragragio.
Other areas of Marinduque
Elsewhere in Marinduque, a road in Sitio Panugduan, Barangay Bantay, Boac, was reported temporarily impassable to vehicles after floodwaters eroded the soil and damaged the lower portion of the road.
Similarly, a landslide occurred in Sitio Rose, Barangay Puting Buhangin, Mogpog, Marinduque, due to heavy rainfall last night. The road in the area is currently inaccessible to vehicles.
