Senator Christopher "Bong" Go is urging Filipinos to remain vigilant about the health risks posed by smog from fireworks, which can linger in the air for days after New Year’s celebrations.

“While New Year’s celebrations are beautiful, we must not forget that smog from fireworks can harm health, especially for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions,” Senator Go stated.

Scientific studies reveal that smog from fireworks contains fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which can stay in the atmosphere for prolonged periods, depending on weather conditions. Prolonged exposure to these pollutants has been linked to respiratory issues and the worsening of conditions such as asthma and bronchitis.

Senator Go urged individuals experiencing symptoms related to smog exposure to seek medical attention promptly. He also reminded the public to utilize Malasakit Centers, which offer streamlined medical and financial assistance.

“Malasakit Centers are for everyone, especially those who urgently need assistance to cover hospital bills,” he reiterated.

To reduce the risks associated with smog, Senator Go advised the public to avoid outdoor activities in areas with heavy smoke, ensure proper ventilation at home, and wear face masks when necessary.

He also called on local government units and health officials to actively monitor air quality and provide timely updates to the public.

Senator Go concluded by emphasizing the government’s ongoing commitment to addressing health challenges, including those arising from environmental hazards, through accessible healthcare programs and grassroots initiatives.

“Let’s always prioritize safety, especially in dealing with smog. Health is life, and protecting everyone’s well-being is essential to welcoming the new year happily and safely,” he said.
