Wicked has officially become the highest-grossing movie based on a Broadway musical worldwide, surpassing Universal Studio's previous record-holder, Mamma Mia!

The film has amassed an estimated $634.4 million globally, with $424.2M from domestic earnings and $210.2M from international markets.

Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked has broken multiple records, including becoming the biggest Broadway adaptation domestically and the top-grossing stage musical adaptation in 46 markets.

The film outpaced 2008's Mamma Mia!, which earned $611M globally, and has also exceeded the lifetime grosses of other popular musical adaptations such as Les Misérables ($442.8M), Grease ($396M), and Chicago ($306.8M).

Currently, Wicked ranks as the sixth highest-grossing movie of 2024 and is the only non-sequel in the top six. The films that have outperformed it this year are Dune: Part Two, Moana 2, Despicable Me 4, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Inside Out 2.
