Northern Mindanao — The 4th Infantry Division (4ID) of the Philippine Army emphasized that Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s vision for a free and prosperous Philippines continues to inspire and guide the efforts of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), particularly in the context of the army's ongoing mission to maintain peace, order, and security in the region.
The 4ID joined the nation in marking the 128th anniversary of Rizal’s martyrdom on Monday with a flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony at the Rizal Monument, Plaza Divisoria, Cagayan de Oro City.
Colonel Leo E. Bongosia, the division's inspector general and acting chief of staff, who represented Major General Jose Maria R. Cuerpo II, commander of the 4ID, said Rizal's ideals have continued relevance in today’s society, particularly regarding freedom, education, and patriotism.
Colonel Bongosia was joined by Atty. Edgar Cabanlas, City Councilor for District 2, who represented Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Rolando "Klarex" A. Uy as the honoree for the day’s ceremony.
The flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony at the Rizal Monument served as a moment of reflection for the people of Cagayan de Oro and the entire nation, remembering the sacrifices and heroism of Dr. Rizal, whose death occurred on 30 December 1896.
The activity was organized by the City Government of Cagayan de Oro in close collaboration with the 4th Infantry Division, the Philippine National Police (PNP), and other local and national government agencies.
Colonel Bongosia said: “Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s dedication to his country and his belief in the power of education and peaceful reform should be a reminder to all of us, especially to those in public service. The 4th Infantry Division, together with our partners in local government and other stakeholders, is committed to carrying forward the ideals that Dr. Rizal fought for, fostering a society that values justice, unity, and progress."
This year’s commemoration highlighted the strong collaboration between the military and civilian sectors in preserving the nation’s history and advancing the shared mission of peace and development.
