The New Ninoy Aquino International Airport Infra Corp. (NNIC) is currently looking into allegations of unfair treatment of baggage porters employed by a long-standing third-party service provider at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
This comes in response to complaints that NNIC received about the service provider that manages airport luggage recovery and porterage.
Reports said that the provider’s contract was last renewed by the Manila International Airport Authority in 2022 and remains effective for three years.
In the statement on Sunday, the NAIA operator stated that they take these complaints seriously, even though those porters are not their direct employees, but as the airport operator, it is their duty to uphold standards and guarantee that all service providers regard their workers’ rights, treat them fairly and adhere to labor laws.
NNIC has made improving working conditions for employees under its direct employment a top priority since taking over operations at NAIA on 14 September 2024.
Offering higher pay and putting in place workplace regulations that support professionalism and justice are two examples of this.
As the operator of NAIA, NNIC further stated that they want to create a workplace that embodies their vision of a contemporary, effective airport, where staff and passengers alike can benefit from an environment of fairness, respect, professionalism and accountability.
