As Javier Carro reported on Inside the Games, the Philippine lacrosse team continues to defy expectations with its rapid rise in the sport. In just over a decade since it began playing, the team achieved a silver medial at the World Lacrosse Super Sizes tournament held last week in Hong Kong, signaling its growing ambition to compete at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028.

The Philippines has made remarkable progress despite being a latecomer to the sport compared to its Asian rivals. The Philippine Lacrosse Association (PLA), established in 2012 and integrated into the global lacrosse organization in 2014, has led the team to impressive milestones. The squad competed in two men’s world championships, placing 10th in 2018 and 15th in 2023.

At this year’s Super Sixes, the team demonstrated they are not merely participants but genuine contenders. After finishing last in the previous edition of the tournament, the Philippines returned with a stronger lineup, securing three consecutive wins against Germany, China, and Hong Kong to book their place in the semi-finals.

In the semi-final, the team faced Germany once again, prevailing in a nail-biting 17-16 victory in extra time. However, in the final, they fell short against the experienced FOGO Stealers, losing 21-19. While they missed the gold, their silver medal performance highlighted their readiness to compete against the world’s best.

The inclusion of six-a-side lacrosse in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games marks a pivotal moment for the sport, which is returning to the Olympic stage after more than a century. This fast-paced and dynamic format is set to captivate a global audience.

For the Philippine team, qualifying for LA28 is an achievable but challenging goal. While they acknowledge the strength of other Asian teams, their success in Hong Kong has bolstered their confidence. “We are at a crucial moment for lacrosse in the Philippines,” PLA representatives stated.

To achieve their Olympic ambitions, the team must continue to develop its program and participate in key events such as the 2025 Pan-American Lacrosse Championship and the EuroLax Sixes Cup. These tournaments will be critical to securing their place in the Olympic competition.

Sue Redfern, former president of World Lacrosse, described the sport’s inclusion in LA28 as a “seminal achievement.” She referred to it as a “golden opportunity” for athletes to showcase their skills on the global stage. “After decades of hard work and dedication, lacrosse is back on the Olympic stage at LA28,” Redfern said. “This pivotal moment will inspire future generations of lacrosse players.”

The journey of the Philippine lacrosse team exemplifies resilience, determination, and growth. If they continue on this trajectory, their Olympic dream may soon become a reality.
