De La Salle University head coach Topex Robinson cherished the moments he spent coaching and guiding a one-of-a-kind talent in accomplished Green Archer Kevin Quiambao for the past two years in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).
It may not have been the farewell they both wanted after La Salle relinquished the throne to worthy rival University of the Philippines in a thrilling best-of-three finals series that went the full distance, but Robinson was just grateful for Quiambao’s return in Season 87 after winning it all last year.
The two had one last intimate conversation as Quiambao made his final bow on the court wearing the green and white jersey.
Robinson held Quiambao close and thanked him for all his effort to lead the Green Archers’ title defense bid although all came in vain after bowing to the Fighting Maroons, 62-66, in Game 3 of the finals last Sunday witnessed by a record crowd.
“He will always be remembered as one of the great La Sallian, you know, I guess one of best that ever wore that jersey,” Robinson said.
The sophomore mentor owed Quiambao his first-ever title as a collegiate coach. The back-to-back Most Valuable Player powered La Salle to its 10th title overall and first since 2016 in Season 86.
It was Robinson’s most cherished welcome gift in his career.
After the heartbreaking loss, Quiambao announced his decision to move up to the professional ranks and play for Goyang Sono SkyGunners in the Korean Basketball League.
“My college career comes to an end, I will pursue my NBA dream and start my journey by playing professional ball in Goyang Sono SkyGunners and developing my game even more,” wrote Quiambao on his social media account on Monday.
The Gilas Pilipinas member’s decision did not come as a surprise for Robinson and the Green Archers.
“You know, it is what it is. It’s not a surprise for us that this might be his final season but we prepared well for this. He just fought until the final buzzer and never gave up,” Robinson said.
With Quiambao’s departure, Robinson will rely on senior Mike Phillips, who vowed to return for one final dance, and a set of newcomers ready to redeem La Salle’s lost glory and pride.
Transferees Mason Amos, Kean Baclaan and Jacob Cortez bring a bright future for the Green Archers.
“There’s those guys that are coming in. It’s nice to see that the future of the program is still gonna be exciting. You know, having those guys coming in so that’s something to look forward to and be excited about Season 88,” Robinson said.
