The bells are ringing, the air is crisp, and the streets sparkle with twinkling lights as families and friends gather to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year. For many Filipinos, Christmas is not just a holiday; it’s a vibrant cultural phenomenon, steeped in time-honored traditions that unite communities in faith, joy and devotion.

A month of cherished traditions

Wendy, 22, from Isabela, believes December is a month of cherished traditions. “For me, Christmas is all about family and faith,” she says.

“We begin with Simbang Gabi, and it’s such a beautiful way to come together every early evening. Then, we wrap up the season by strolling through the dazzling Christmas displays at SM Supermalls.”

Simbang Gabi, which traces its origins back to the Spanish colonial period, has been a beloved tradition for over 350 years.

‘Simbang Gabi’ honors the Virgin Mary

For Wendy and her family, Simbang Gabi is a sacred time of togetherness.

Held from 16 to 24 December, Simbang Gabi honors the Virgin Mary and prepares the faithful for the birth of Jesus Christ. “After attending Simbang Gabi, my family and I usually head to SM. It’s become part of our tradition to visit the mall after the evening Mass. We enjoy spending time together, admiring the Christmas displays and shopping for gifts.”

They usually attend Mass at a small chapel in their Barangay, where the faithful gather in close-knit unity.

Unlike in other churches where Mass is held early in the morning, their Barangay celebrates Simbang Gabi in the evening at 5 p.m., making it a community affair that feels both intimate and lively.

While Simbang Gabi remains central to the Filipino Christmas celebration, modern traditions also take root, with many families making visits to iconic shopping destinations such as SM Supermalls. “Going to SM after Simbang Gabi adds to the celebration by extending the festive spirit. The mall is filled with decorations, lights and a joyful atmosphere that perfectly complements the peaceful feeling from the Mass. It’s a way to carry that Christmas joy into more family bonding time.”

Trip to SM — a must

For Wendy, a visit to SM is an essential part of their Christmas tradition. After the early evening Mass, she and her family take a leisurely 30-minute drive to SM Cauayan. The festive energy at the mall complements the joy they felt at church, and they spend the evening bonding over shopping, festive treats and admiring the sparkling lights and displays.

“One tradition I really enjoy is walking around the mall and taking photos by the Christmas displays. We also love trying out the holiday treats available at the food courts — those little moments make our celebration even more special.”

SM malls have beautiful decorations

SM Mall of Asia, SM Megamall and SM Aura are among the many SM malls that transform into magical backdrops, perfect for family photos and creating cherished memories.

In the heart of Metro Manila, SM City North EDSA and SM Mall of Asia take center stage, offering visitors grand displays and festive activities.

Meanwhile, SM malls in North Luzon, such as SM City Baguio, embrace a rustic charm, enhanced by the cool mountain air.

In the Visayas and Mindanao, malls like SM City Cebu and SM Lanang showcase not only the holiday spirit but also the diversity of Filipino culture through unique performances and regional celebrations.

“I’ve noticed that SM often has Christmas sales and special promotions leading up to Christmas. There are also fun events like Christmas carolers or performances by local groups, making the mall experience feel even more festive.”

And because these malls are located strategically at the heart of these communities, they are always accessible to all those coming from nearby churches to spend time in after Simbang Gabi.

As the final Simbang Gabi Mass culminates in the grand Misa de Noche on Christmas Eve, families come together for the traditional Noche Buena feast.

Christmas in the mall is for all

This celebration, overflowing with love and unity, encapsulates everything that Christmas stands for: devotion, familial bonds and the enduring strength of faith.

This Christmas season, whether you are at church for Simbang Gabi or marveling at the festive displays in an SM Supermall, one thing remains constant: The Filipino Christmas is more than a holiday. It is a testament to the unwavering spirit of hope, joy, and togetherness that unites the nation.
