In a world increasingly focused on sustainability, Okada Manila is setting a new standard for luxury hospitality by integrating environmentally-conscious practices into its operations. The five-star resort is making a bold move to reduce its environmental footprint by replacing single-use plastic bottles with sustainable, high-quality, filtered water.
Through its Okada Green Heart program, the resort is introducing a groundbreaking shift in its water service by partnering with Nordaq, a Swedish company known for its state-of-the-art water filtration technology, to provide premium water in reusable glass bottles.
As sustainability becomes an urgent global priority, Okada Manila is stepping up its efforts to reduce waste and promote a greener future. “We are elevating our waste management protocols through the Okada Green Heart program,” said Byron Yip, president and chief operating officer of Okada Manila.
"This move demonstrates that we can prioritize the planet, while still delivering a premium experience to our guests."
Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental issues today. Millions of tons of plastic waste are dumped into oceans and landfills each year, threatening ecosystems, wildlife, and even human health. By replacing single-use plastic bottles with its own filtration and bottling system, Okada Manila is playing its role in combatting this crisis.
“We are significantly reducing the demand for single-use plastics by producing our own water,” Yip explained. “At Okada Manila, we believe in being part of the solution and setting an example for the industry.”
This partnership with Nordaq enables Okada Manila to produce up to 1,000 bottles of filtered water per hour, all served in stylish reusable glass bottles. Not only does this initiative enhance the quality of water provided to guests, but it also eliminates the need for approximately two million single-use plastic bottles annually.
For Okada Manila, sustainability it does not come at the cost of quality. With its new water system, it ensures that guests enjoy the same premium experience they expect, with the added benefit of knowing they are contributing to a greener planet.
“By embracing this change, we’re not just reducing waste — we’re setting a new standard for responsible hospitality,” said Rob Scott, vice president of hotel operations. “This initiative is a win for both our guests and the environment.”
Okada Manila’s adoption of Nordaq’s advanced filtration system is already setting a precedent for other luxury hotels and resorts to follow. With the capacity to filter and bottle water directly on-site, the resort not only ensures premium quality but also minimizes the carbon footprint typically associated with plastic production and transportation.
This initiative is only the beginning as Okada Manila plans to expand the use of Nordaq water throughout other areas of its operations, integrating it to all guest services across the resort. The move will be part of their ongoing commitment to sustainability, ensuring that every guest experience reflects the values of responsible, quality, and environmental stewardship.
“We hope our guests will appreciate this eco-friendly choice and join us in supporting a more sustainable future for generations to come,” added Scott.
