It seems unthinkable a police officer in New York City would shoplift. But one officer of the famed New York Police Department (NYPD) was arrested on Saturday after reportedly taking cough medicines from a Target store on Long Island without paying for them.
Sgt. Rayna Madho, 41, a detective squad commander at NYPD headquarters, was suspended without pay immediately after her arrest and charged with two counts of petty larceny, a Nassau County police spokesperson said, according to New York Daily News (NYDN).
More shocking than the arrest was that Madho allegedly shoplifted twice, on 24 November and 7 December. Moreover, the price of the cough drops stolen last month was $4.99 while the cough syrup she allegedly took last week was worth $9.99, when an officer like her was making $200,000 in salary per year, NYDN reports.
Madho has denied the charges.
Meanwhile, some other thieves were not small-time. They struck in northern England on Monday, stealing pies baked by Michelin-starred chef Tommy Banks who has several food businesses in the area.
The pies, which had Banks’ name on them, were priced at 1,000 pounds each, CNN reports.
The thieves hijacked a van containing 2,500 Tommy Banks pies that were supposed to be sold at the York Christmas Market.
Banks aired a video appealing to the thieves.
“I know you’re criminals, but maybe just do something nice because it’s Christmas and maybe we can feed a few thousand people with these pies that you’ve stolen. Do the right thing,” CNN quoted Banks as saying.
Later, police found the van and the pies, and they were totally damaged, a total loss, Banks rued.
