Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island continues to exhibit heightened unrest, with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recording 22 volcanic earthquakes in 24 hours ending early Saturday, 7 December.

The volcano, under Alert Level 2 since 3 June, emitted 2,946 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Friday. This follows a sulfur dioxide flux of 7,594 tonnes recorded on 23 November.

Moderate plumes, rising to 200 meters and drifting westward, were observed during the latest monitoring period, indicating continuous degassing from the crater. Phivolcs also reported that Kanlaon’s edifice remains inflated, signaling ongoing magma buildup beneath the surface.

Phivolcs elevated Kanlaon’s alert status earlier this year due to increasing unrest caused by shallow magmatic activity. Experts warn that this could lead to more explosive eruptions or even a hazardous magmatic event.

Authorities continue to prohibit entry into the four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone around Kanlaon, while flights near the volcano remain restricted due to the potential for ash emissions.

Residents near the volcano are urged to remain vigilant, stay informed, and follow all advisories as Phivolcs continues its close monitoring.
