The Philippine Ports Authority (ppa) on Wednesday vowed to uphold the rights of women and welcome clients regardless of sexual orientation in all public ports nationwide as it starts an 18-day campaign to end violence against women (VAW) and enforce compliance with the Safe Spaces Act (SSA) within its jurisdiction.

According to PPA general manager Atty. Jay Daniel Santiago, his agency launched programs and information drives to ensure gender equality and maintain comfort for all passengers during their trip this holiday season.

Based on the record of the PPA, there have been no recorded complaints related to the SSA, also known as “Bawal Bastos Law,” in public ports during the past peak seasons.

The agency strictly implements policies and measures to protect all passengers at PPA terminals by using CCTV cameras and roving port police.

Also, in response to the calls for equality of the LGBTQIA community, there are gender-neutral restrooms that were opened in 2019.

“Our social media pages are also active where you can send a message at any time and someone will answer you in case of a complaint about the flight at the port,” said Santiago, who also appealed to the public to be alert and follow the rules to maintain order and safety for all.

Meanwhile, the PPA’s VAW-free Philippines campaign slogan of “VAW End, Now is the Time!” are aired via infomercials shown on TV monitors of terminals to inform the public of their rights and the steps that can be taken in the event of an undesirable situation.

“At PPA, we are not only protecting women but all genders. This includes having equal opportunities for members of the LGBTQ community to get a position that is in line with their ability,” Santiago added.

Currently, there are more and more female officers heading Port Management Offices, a huge step towards gender equality in the industry.

The PPA also launched activities such as film showings that raise awareness about VAWC, healthcare seminars and training such as “Men Opposed to Violence Everywhere.”

PPA encourages every Filipino to join the campaign to completely end VAW and uphold the dignity of everyone, regardless of gender.
