Last week, we launched the Philippine Intellectual Property Strategy 2025-2030 to set the course for protecting Filipino innovation and creativity in the next five years, defining the future of our knowledge economy.
Hapag-Isipan — a strategy that envisions the Philippines as a global “hapag” or table — a gathering place for innovation, collaboration and the free exchange of ideas (“isipan”). This strategy imagines a nation where ideas are generated, protected, nurtured and propelled into the global marketplace.
The name “Hapag” is no accident. It evokes an image of a banquet table, a place where diverse ideas come together to be shared, nurtured and celebrated. In this context, the “Hapag-Isipan” strategy sets out to establish the Philippines as a “global hapag” From this table, we will offer our creativity, technological capabilities, ingenuity and our commercial potential.
The Philippine Intellectual Property Strategy 2025-2030 is a blueprint for growth, driven by four core pillars:
1. Strengthening IP Awareness and Education — From the grassroots to the highest levels of professional development, we are committed to helping Filipinos understand the value and potential of their IP assets. Through partnerships with schools, universities and industry, we will make IP a part of the national conversation.
This strategy imagines a nation where ideas are generated, protected, nurtured and propelled into the global marketplace.
2. Building Robust Systems for IP Valuation and Commercialization — The true power of IP lies not just in its protection but in its monetization. By standardizing valuation methodologies and creating an IP marketplace, we can unlock new pathways for financing, investment and entrepreneurship. This will catalyze the creation of new industries and elevate existing ones.
3. Enhancing Local and Global Collaboration — At the core of “Hapag-Isipan” is a commitment to collaboration both within the Philippines and on the global stage. We will protect the Philippines’ rich cultural heritage while ensuring our traditional knowledge is recognized and celebrated worldwide. Additionally, we will encourage co-creation with international partners, ensuring that Filipino innovation is embedded in the global IP value chain.
4. Maximizing Emerging Technologies — Technology is rapidly reshaping the IP landscape. From artificial intelligence to blockchain, the tools that will drive IP protection and commercialization are evolving at an unprecedented rate. By embracing these technologies, we can streamline the IP process, ensuring that Filipino creations are both protected and ready for the global marketplace.
