The Department of Health (DoH) reported that it has been monitoring the rise in influenza-like illnesses (ILIs) during the amihan or northeast monsoon season.

As of 23 November, there have been 161,555 ILI cases nationwide, which is 18 percent lower than the 196,045 cases recorded during the same period in 2022.

Previously, DoH Secretary Teodoro Herbosa stated that the department expects cases of respiratory infections, such as common coughs, colds, and Covid-19, to rise during the amihan season.

"Colder weather can lead to flu-like diseases, but they can be prevented through simple measures," Herbosa said in Filipino.

"If you have symptoms of a cough or cold, it's better to stay at home to prevent spreading it and to wash your hands regularly," he added.

The Health chief also reminded the public to take preventive measures, including frequent handwashing, wearing masks when unwell, practicing proper cough etiquette, and seeking medical advice when symptoms arise, to help curb the spread of respiratory infections.

The amihan season typically lasts from October to February.
