The Department of Health (DoH) said it has been monitoring the rise in influenza-like illnesses (ILIs) during the Amihan or northeast monsoon season.
As of 23 November, there have been 161,555 ILI cases nationwide. This is 18 percent lower compared to the 196,045 cases recorded during the same period in 2023.
Previously, DoH Secretary Teodoro Herbosa said the Health department expects cases of respiratory infections such as common coughs and colds and Covid-19 to rise during the Amihan season.
"Colder weather can cause flu-like diseases, but they can be prevented through simple measures," Herbosa said in Filipino.
"If you have symptoms of a cough or cold, it's better to stay at home first so it doesn't spread and wash your hands regularly," he added.
The Health chief also reminded the public to take preventive measures, including frequent handwashing, wearing masks when unwell, practicing proper cough etiquette, and seeking medical advice when symptoms arise, to help curb the spread of respiratory infections.
The Amihan season typically lasts from October until February.
