Thousands of residents in the remote Turtle Islands stand to benefit from the first off-grid solar-powered cell site that Globe has started to build on Taganak Island.
Located in a heritage-protected area and wildlife sanctuary in Tawi-Tawi, this groundbreaking initiative aims to bridge the digital divide in one of the Philippines’ most remote areas.
The facility is expected to provide around 10,000 residents in the isolated islands with reliable mobile and data connectivity to support essential services, environmental protection, and economic growth.
Visitors to the wildlife sanctuary will also benefit from consistent connectivity during their trips to this far-flung destination.
Set for completion by mid-2025, the project marks a significant step in protecting the Turtle Islands, a critical nesting ground for green sea turtles. Enhanced mobile connectivity will bolster the monitoring and preservation of the area’s vital ecosystem.
Powered entirely by solar energy, the innovative Globe site will feature an advanced antenna system and AI-driven energy management with remote monitoring capabilities.
Dirty fuel era ends
The use of solar power eliminates the need for diesel generators, addressing the challenges of limited transportation and unpredictable fuel deliveries to avoid approximately 40 metric tons of CO2 equivalent annually.
“This project is a solid testament to Globe’s commitment to sustainable connectivity, made possible by a strong partnership with the government and local leaders to empower even our most remote communities,” said Gerhard Tan, senior director and head of Technology Strategy and Innovations at Globe, during the groundbreaking ceremony.
Globe is collaborating closely with the Local Government of Turtle Islands, the 2nd Marine Brigade of the Western Mindanao Command, and the Bangsamoro Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy to bring life-enabling connectivity to the region.
“Connecting Turtle Islands to the digital world marks a new chapter for our community, bringing opportunities for growth, eco-tourism, and security through our partnership with Globe and our dedicated government partners,” Municipal Mayor Mohammad Faizal Jamalul said.
