“Never be cowed by strong opponents”
This was the statement made by Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna while presiding over the capital city’s commemoration of the 161st birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio on Saturday, 30 November.
The event featured the unveiling of the newly renovated founding site of the Kataas-taasan, Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (Katipunan) on Elcano Street, honoring the leader of the Katipuneros of the Philippine Revolution.
A wreath-laying and program were also held in Tutuban, Tondo, where Bonifacio was born to the day in 1863, to Santiago Bonifacio and Catalina de Castro.
Bonifacio, who would be executed with his brother on the order of General Emilio Aguinaldo, co-founded the Katipunan on 7 July 1892, with fellow nationalists Deodato Arellano, Valentin Diaz, Ladislao Diwa, José Dizon and Teodoro Plata.
Their primary goal was independence from the Spanish Empire through revolution, unlike the pacifist stance taken by National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal.
The birth of Bonifacio was also celebrated with a wreath-laying in Pinaglabanan, San Juan Shrine, which hosts memorabilia on the hero.
Mayor Lacuna emphasized the relevance of Bonifacio’s values 161 years after his birth, stating: “Andres Bonifacio is not just a hero of the past, but a model for all of us today. His courage and principles remind us that we need not be intimidated by stronger opponents, especially when we stand for what is right.”
“He lived by the principle that true friendship never abandons you, no matter how difficult the struggle. He founded the Katipunan with friends, not out of personal ambition, but driven by a deep desire to free the country,” Lacuna added.
Mayor Lacuna also highlighted how Bonifacio’s principles should guide every Manila civil servant’s commitment to public service.
She characterized Bonifacio as the embodiment of courage and compassion.
“In every project and service we provide to the people of Manila, may they see the same dedication and concern that Bonifacio demonstrated. The spirit of Gat Andres Bonifacio continues to guide our service,” she said.
