Standhardinger makes shock retirement

Christian Standhardinger is calling it quits in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

Terrafirma team governor Bobby Rosales said Thursday that the Filipino-German informed the Dyip of his plans to hang his jersey after a seven-year stint in the league.

Standhardinger missed Terrafirma’s 87-116 Commissioner’s Cup opening-day loss to Converge Wednesday at the Philsports Arena.

“Christian has informed us he wants to retire. We reminded him of his live contract set to expire by yearend,” Rosales said.

Standhardinger was shipped by Barangay Ginebra to the Dyip in a surprise trade before the start of Season 49.

He, however, only played six games in the Governors’ Cup before missing the rest of the conference after sustaining a left knee injury.

The two-time Best Player of the Conference winner averaged 16.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists in his short stint with Terrafirma.

Interim coach Raymond Tiongco said the 35-year-old power forward no longer attends team practices.

Standhardinger was drafted first overall by San Miguel Beer in 2017 where he helped the Beermen win the Philippine Cup and Commissioner’s Cup in 2019.

He was traded to NorthPort in 2019 and spent two seasons with the Batang Pier before getting shipped again to the Kings in 2021.

Standhardinger powered Ginebra to a pair of titles including a Finals Most Valuable Player.

In his final season with the Kings, Standhardinger had a double-double average of 19.2 points and 10.2 rebounds with 5.0 assists.
