The iconic Filipino band Aegis confirmed the passing of one of their beloved vocalists, Mercy Sunot, on Monday. Mercy, whose powerful voice helped define the sound of Aegis, lost her battle with cancer while in California, U.S.

"It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Mercy, one of the beloved vocalists of AEGIS Band. She bravely fought her battle with cancer but has now found peace and rest," the band announced on Facebook.

Mercy's voice was more than just a part of Aegis; it became a source of comfort, joy, and strength for countless fans. Her performances of hits like “Halik,” “Basang-basa sa Ulan,” and “Luha” have left an indelible mark on Filipino music.

“Mercy’s voice wasn’t just a part of AEGIS—it was a voice that brought comfort, joy, and strength to so many. She has touched countless lives, inspiring fans and lifting spirits with every song she sang. Her passion, warmth, and unforgettable presence on stage will forever be cherished in our hearts," it added.

Mercy had been in California for several months, seeking treatment for Stage 4 breast and lung cancer. In her final TikTok video, she shared her struggles after undergoing a lung operation.

"Tapos na yung surgery ko sa lungs. Pero biglang nahirapan akong huminga, so dinala ako sa ICU. May tubig, may inflammation sa lungs ko so ginagawan na nila ng paraan,” she said, describing her condition from the intensive care unit.

(I just finished my lung surgery, but I suddenly had difficulties breathing. I was brought to the ICU. Now, I have inflammation in my lungs, so they're doing something. I was given steroids to help with the inflammation.)

Doctors administered steroids to aid her breathing, and in a tearful plea, she asked fans, "Ipag-pray niyo ko please para matapos na itong pagsubok na ito. Pag-pray niyo ako."

(Please pray for me so this trial will be over. Pray for me.)

Just days before her passing, on 8 November, Mercy attended veteran singer Eva Eugenio’s show in Hayward, California. Although not part of the lineup, she was invited on stage for a surprise performance, delighting fans with her enduring talent and receiving heartfelt gifts. At the time, she shared with ABS-CBN News that her chemotherapy was showing positive results, and she was hopeful about an upcoming lung operation.

However, her condition worsened. On November 16, she expressed a desire to return home to the Philippines, according to a friend based in California, but was too weak to make the journey. The following day, she succumbed to multiple organ failure.

Aegis’ music, including classics like “Halik,” will continue to be celebrated, but Mercy’s absence will be deeply felt by fans and the Filipino music community. Her contribution to Aegis and OPM (Original Pilipino Music) has left a legacy that will be remembered for years to come.
